OUR DESTINATIONS - MENORCA

Menorca is one of the main islands from the Balearic archipelago. Its name stems from 'Minorica', referring to the fact of being smaller than its opposite, Majorca. Menorca is placed in the center of the western Mediterranean, equidistant to Spain and Sardinia, to Languedoc and Argelia. It is the most oriental isle of the Balearic archipelago. With its 702 square kilometers and its 216 kilometers of coast, it is the second biggest after Majorca. The landscape is very varied with lagoons and wide humid areas, small streams, soft hills and profound gullies. Its coastline has safe marinas like the outstanding port of Mao, one of the largest in the world. The coast is not very high, though rocky and irregular, with high cliffs in some parts. Still, in Menorca we can find beaches for all tastes, large shores with soft, golden, sand, as well as recondite and unexpected coves with crystal-clear waters. The southern coast is made up of white sands surrounded by green pine groves ant the waters are mostly of an astonishing turquoise shade. The north is wilder and more rough due to the north wind's erosion on the rocks, configuring and idyllic landscape of beaches and virgin coves.

The local cuisine is typically Mediterranean, composed of natural and fresh ingredients both coming from the land and the sea. Among its highlights, the delightful meat from the indigenous farms, fresh fish, seafood, lobster, - basic ingredient of the traditional 'caldereta'. The home-made cheese is prepared in the small holdings and the sausages are also very typical and tasty. Handcraft here is mostly born out of isolation and necessity. The jewelry is, nowadays, one of the main industries of the island. Shoes are also recognized internationally for their quality and design. The 'avarca', the ancient and simple footwear used by peasants, stands out among them. Ceramics and painted fabrics are two other important activities.

The cultural offer is wide an varied. Special attention is to be paid to the numerous prehistoric villages and monuments. There are several musea, and the main events of the season are the International Opera Week in Mao, the Summer Music Festival, and the concerts of the Davidic Chapel in Ciutadella. Jazz concerts are becoming increasingly common and popular. Horses are central to all popular festivities celebrated during the summer. From june to september horses,- adorned with laces, embroidery, and colourful carnations-, and riders,- dressed in black and white-, bring to life a ritual born in the fourteenth century.

The coves of Pregonada, in the north, and Mitjana, in the south, are well-known. Besides, many bends and corners do not have any access by land. Thus they can be ony approached with a boat, combining the exclusivity of reaching those unaccessible spots with the pleasure of sailing. Sailyachter offers you some unique days to get to know this paradise of strategic location in the Mediterranean.
